How We Begin

Starting art therapy usually involves an initial consultation to understand your needs and preferences. For online sessions, you'll need the right technology and a quiet, private space. In-person sessions often start with an introduction to the studio or therapy space. During a session, you can expect a structured but flexible approach, guided by a qualified therapist who tailors activities to your specific goals.

What to Expect in an Art Therapy Session

In art therapy, we tailor your therapy around your needs. For example, you might create images that show your journey to safety or pieces that represent your strengths. These activities help you turn painful memories into sources of inspiration and hope. Regularly making art gives you a sense of control and encourages you to take an active role in your healing.

Here are some examples of the techniques we use to help people of all ages and artistic abilities to engage with their creative nature to express their emotions:

  1. Scribble Game: Just as it sounds, we create scribble drawings.

  2. 1:1 Drawing: The therapist and client take turns drawing parts of a picture. This helps build relationships and can result in funny, unique art, especially useful with children.

  3. Mask Making: Designing masks to explore different aspects of identity and emotions.

  4. Collage Making: We use this technique to guide the art making process as its something we can do together. Piecing together images using different materials allows us to explore and understand our clients emotions.

  5. Abstract Painting: We use this technique to offload emotions. It can be a bit messy but it has the ability to give our clients the opportunity for emotional release.

  6. Storytelling with Art: Creating visual stories to express personal narratives and experiences.
